Fear Itself: Hulk vs. Dracula #3 Review

Fear Itself: Hulk vs. Dracula #3

So let’s talk about the book. The vampires are out of options. There is nothing left to do but pick a spot and make a stand. Dracula chooses the location and even manages to come up with a trick or two to give the Hulk pause. Too bad this is not your regular Hulk. Smashing through everything in his path, Hulk finally reaches Dracula and is about to deliver a killing blow. Suddenly, RaizoKodo returns and using some vampire magic, he manages to reach the mind of Dr. Banner who overpowers the influence of the Worthy Hammer and reverts back to Banner. Seizing an opportunity, Dracula tries to kill Banner but he changes back into the Hulk and jumps away. Dracula takes the hammer as a spoil of war and reinstates Raizo’s banishment, but Raizo has a plan. One he will set in motion soon. And that’s the book.

So let’s talk opinions. This issue was clearly the best of the three. There was actually some sort of thin plot to it. It wasn’t just Hulk smashing anything and everything in his way while Dracula talked and postured. We actually had a second or two of pretty cool moments. I really found the adamantium sequence awesome and ingenious. (A Worthy Hulk can actually break adamantium. F’n cool) I was surprised at the way Raizo managed to turn the battle. I didn’t expect it and that simple plot twist made the book infinitely more interesting for me. I knew that Dracula would banish Raizo after the truce was over so that wasn’t a shocker. What did surprise me is that Hulk let Dracula take the hammer. Maybe he figured if he touched it again, he wold revert back to Worthy and all of Raizo’s efforts would be wasted. It was also nice to finally get a moral across the entire senseless smashfest. That moral is that love conquers fear. I can live with that. So, now that the Hulk is himself again, I hope he makes it back to the USA in time to be involved in the final battle against the Serpent and his remaining Worthy. Hopefully we’ll see him in Fear Itself #7. I’m also looking forward to reading more of Raizo and his Forgiven crew. They really fleshed out for me nicely during this mini and made me want to invest in their future development. Excellent writing work in that sense. Hopefully Marvel will not put these guys on the shelf for another decade. The art this issue was all right, once again. Nothing spectacular or memorable, but lots of nice big splash images and cool poses. Facewise, I wasn’t too impressed, but you know what they say, all Vampires look alike. (Which they sort of did this issue. Every Vampire’s face had the same expression and structure) Still, it wasn’t unreadable and it didn’t take anything away from the overall enjoyment of the book. Overall, this mini was actually one of the very few tie-ins that actually made sense to be called a tie in. It had something to do with the overall “event”. It had a profound effect on the “event’s” direction. And, if you did not read this mini, you might actually have missed out on an important piece of the “event”, thus making it more difficult to enjoy the “event” as a whole. Good work, Marvel. Finally you created a tie-in that was actually necessary and worth spending money on!! That’s my opinion folks. Take it or leave it.
