The big green monster is back, and he must face his most dangerous opponent ever. His maker. Today I will be reviewing The Incredible Hulk #1. Please leave a comment to let me know what you think.

The Incredible Hulk #1

So let’s talk about the book. The Incredible Hulk and Dr. Banner are no longer one being. Hulk has removed himself from the surface world. He has gone underground and is living with a reclusive village of Moloids. In exchange for killing monsterous predators and feeding the village, the Moloids leave Hulk alone. Still, Hulk senses that inevitably, someone will come looking for him. He is not wrong. A feast that the Hulk has finally decided to join is interrupted by Amanda Von Doom (no relation) and her robotic minions. They attack the Hulk and try to capture him. When that fails miserably, Amanda decides to show Hulk that she is human and she asks him for his help. It seems that Hulk is no longer the problem. Banner is. Meanwhile, the good doctor has secluded himself on an island. He has created mutated evolved mammals to scour the island for more creatures to experiment on. Banner is trying to create the Hulk. However, he just can’t seem to get it right. Also, he might be a tad bit insane. And that’s the book.

So let’s talk opinions. AWESOME. Yes sir, the art on this book is (to steal an adjective) INCREDIBLE. To hell with the story for now. Just look at that cover. That is one bad ass green goliath. You do not want to make this monster angry. Not only does he look ready and able to tear you limb from limb, it appears that he might have already. Silvestri loves to use lots of lines and shadows to add definition and depth to his images and he certainly does that this issue. His monsters look larger than life. His Moloids are small, but distinctive. His Hulk looks savage and deadly. (Always deadly) Like a volcano that can erupt at any second. His backgrounds are extremely detailed and beautiful. You would think that his humans would look strange, but Amanda is very nicely drawn. Even the animals are really life like. As for his action scenes, those are large and intense and leap off the page. Lots of wonderful smashing. In short, this book will never have an issue with art as long as Silvestri is at the helm. Now let’s talk story. Basically, I can sum it up in two words. What story? There really wasn’t anything deep or revealing this issue. Hulk is alone. Hulk gets attacked. Government needs help with Banner. Banner is insane. That’s about it. I’m not saying the story was bad, or confusing. I’m just saying that there wasn’t enough of it. There were no layers to it. Personally, after reading Fear Itself #7, I was expecting to see the Worthy spirit that possessed the Hulk show up and do something. I was expecting Banner to be setting up some masterful plan on how to capture the Hulk. I was expecting something other than Andrea Von Doom. (and trust me, there’s a relation) The Banner segment was nice as it is something original. Usually Hulk becomes insane and mindless. This time around, the split might be affecting Banner in a mental way. Hulk seems fully rational and intelligent, so I guess that rationality is what’s now missing from Banner. I am really interested in seeing where Aaron goes with this angle. In general, I feel that the pacing is moving incredibly fast so far, but that could be just because it is a first issue and Aaron needs to adjust. Hopefully, over the next few issues, that will correct itself and we can get more detailed stories with more action and more smashing. Also, please do not put the Worthy situation on the back burner. At least devote a page or two of subplot to it. Otherwise, the mention of it in Fear Itself #7 will become pointless. Other than that, this issue was phenomenal and worthy of Hulk standards. Especially the art. Keep up the great work and this title will be a massive hit. That’s my opinion folks. Take it or leave it.
