The Incredible Hulk #3
So let’s talk about the book. We start with a quick flashback showing someone helping the Hulk separate from Banner. Flash forward to the present. The Boar Brothers attack the Hulk’s underground home and steal some Moloid children so Hulk engages them in war. The battle is so massive that is causes earthquakes around the world. In the end, Hulk does what he does best and smashes his enemies. He then realizes that Banner will not quit until he finds Hulk so Hulk goes to Amanda Von Doom (no relation)and agrees to aid her in finding Banner. Probes are sent out all over until one finally finds Banner’s island. It is then blown up by Banner, who is ready for the Hulk. He has new weapons to shoot him with and an army of Hulked out animals to tear him apart. And that’s the book.
So let’s talk opinions. Now this was an intense issue. For the first time in three issues, I feel that the writing has finally caught up with the art. Silvestri’s art has dominated the attention of the fans for two months, now its finally time to pay attention to Jason Aaron’s story. I love the added layer to the Hulk’s separation. I always thought he split from Banner as a result of him severing his ties from the Worthy hammer. Now we learn that he actually had help. Hulk made the conscious decision to leave Banner. I’ve never really thought of Hulk as his own person. I always felt he was another aspect of Banner. An angry, raging destructive aspect, but part of Banner nonetheless. I should have remembered that Peter David set the stage for Hulk’s multiple personalities merging so why not have another personality pop out and take control. That was a really nice bit of writing on Aaron’s part. I’m now guessing that when the two were split, Hulk took a portion of Banner’s sanity with him. I loved the humor that was scattered throughout this issue. Gave the book more complexity. The action scenes were awesome. Finally, we got to see Hulk really smashing something. Even if it was more Hulks. I hope that Hulk fighting Hulked out monsters is not the future of this series. We’ve already had that story and it tanked miserably. Hulk needs real enemies to fight. Banner makes a great first opponent, but I want to see some more classic villains make appearances in future story arcs. I love the way this book was paced. The tension just keeps on building from page to page. You really get excited as you see the Hulk run to his friend’s rescue and battle his way against powerful opponents. A really great read. As for the art, hell, what can I say that I haven’t said before? Silvestri is the man. From that awesome shadowed cover, to the great battle layouts, Silvestri’s line work really amplifies the overall images and makes them jump from the page. I love the Hulk coming out of the lava scene. Great pin-up image. (Who knew his clothes were lava proof? Must be some miracle rags) Loved the Boar Brother being smashed from the volcano, through the ocean, and into a mountain layouts. Freaking hilarious and awesome at the same time. The Banner splash at the end was nice even though it reminded me of King Kong. I still say his Hulk facial features need some work but otherwise, this book was artistic gold. I can’t wait to see the smashfest next issue. Also, I’m now really interested in who separated the Hulk from Banner and why. Who would the Hulk go to for help in that sense? Hopefully some clues will be dropped in subsequent issues. I love a sub-plot mystery. Keeps the fans more interested. I know I am. That’s my opinion folks. Take it or leave it.
